The current wave of COVID-19 in Tak Province of Th The current wave of COVID-19 in Tak Province of Thailand has been ongoing for the past three months with an average of over 100 new infections per day, resulting in a steady, severe strain on the local medical system. Since April 1, in Tak province alone, 18,608 people have been infected with COVID-19 and 3,195 people are currently receiving treatment. MTC has treated over 677 COVID-19 patients and been designated to be a vaccination site for the migrant community in Mae Sot. 575 staff of MTC and its partner organizations, along with community members on the priority list for exposure to and consequences of COVID-19, were given their first or second vaccine by trained health workers of MTC and its partner organizations at MTC. MTC has been able to carry out COVID-19 activities thanks to your continued support and generosity. This time we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Burmese diaspora in New Zealand and Canada. Our friends in New Zealand together with their working company (SEALORD GROUP LTD, please see their story here: https://bit.ly/2YQghQ4) and the community raised funds to support people affected by the armed conflicts and the pandemic. Mr Soe Naing (https://www.facebook.com/soe.naing.7315) and friends in Canada raised funds through a cycling fundraising campaign and community engagement in Canada. Mae Sot Hospital has generously supported and donated cash to MTC for food and items for newborn babies. Our supporters, Thai Volunteers, donated milk powder again. The donation will be used for areas in need the most. The new ultrasound machine will help our health workers detect any dangerous signs during the pregnancy and abnormalities in organs such as kidney stones, gallbladder stones, etc. Technicians visited MTC and trained our health workers on how to best utilize all functions of the new machine. On World Environment Day, staffs from Mae Tao Clin On World Environment Day, staffs from Mae Tao Clinic and partner organizations, and our CDC boarding house students cleaned the surrounding area and planted papaya, mango, coconut, and drumstick trees around the clinic. MTC strives to improve its infrastructure in our own premises to be environmentally friendly and reduce its ecological footprint. MTC reduced its reliance on water supplies by installing a rainwater harvesting system. The collected rainwater is used for general area cleaning, sanitation, watering the premises, etc. Over the years, MTC has made efforts to adopt sustainable energy measures. We have installed 80 solar panels on the warehouse and 60 solar panels on the newly-built car park, in addition to the existing 44 panels that were already functioning. Additional solar panels will soon be installed in our health worker dormitory. We thank everyone who participated in the World Environment Day activity. On the #WorldTBDay, Mae Tao Clinic together with S On the #WorldTBDay, Mae Tao Clinic together with Shoklo Malaria Research Unit organized the World TB Day campaign on the campus under the theme 'the clock is ticking' and 180 people participated in this special event. มูลนิธิศุภนิมิตแห่งประเทศไทย - World Vision Foundation of Thailand and SMRU set up the booth to provide health education on TB and distributed gifts to encourage our clients to participate in the event. Globally over 10 million people suffer from TB. Since 2013, MTC collaborates with SMRU to conduct TB screening and annually over 100 lives are saved through treatment. We at Mae Tao Clinic hope that one day we can eliminate the TB in the region through collaborative efforts with our partner organizations. Boonrot TV has donated electronic devices, dry food and hygiene kits to us. These items will be used for helping our staff and clients in need of support. Since COVID-19 broke out in Thailand, our beneficiaries, especially women and children, have been greatly affected. Many have lost jobs, lost contacts with family back in Myanmar and some cannot access services at Mae Tao Clinic or go back home due to the border closure. Despite the challenges, we at Mae Tao Clinic have aimed to ensure the essential health services are continuously provided to people along the border and put utmost efforts to improve infection control in the clinic. 1,390 pregnant women were admitted to the Reproductive Health In-patient Department last year, cared for and safely delivered babies. Dr Terrence has been contributing his knowledge and skills to Mae Tao Clinic for over a decade to improve our medical services. His donation (Theophylline Syrup and Pulse Oximeters) will be used at reproductive health departments to monitor mothers and newborns' stability of oxygenation for determining the need for supplemental oxygen. [Press Release: Mae Tao Clinic - Burma Medical Ass [Press Release: Mae Tao Clinic - Burma Medical Association - Back Pack Health Worker Team, Mae Sot, Thailand] We, the undersigned community and ethnic health organizations working with vulnerable and conflict affected populations in ethnic communities of Burma strongly condemn the February 1st military coup and its attendant violence on elected representatives of the country as well as against human rights activists and members of civil society.
