Aye was selected as a representative of the CDC school for the school health activities. She has been volunteering with MTC’s community health team and assisted with various events over the last two years. Aye is also actively engaged with school activities, which she enjoys a lot.

Mae Tao Clinic (MTC)’s Community Outreach Department including School Health team regularly visits Migrant Learning Centers (MLCs) to ensure students learn in a safe and healthy environment through students’ health checks, assessing the schools’ environment and whether MLCs promote a healthy lifestyle. As part of the school health program, selected teachers and students from each MLC receive training on school health management, which enables them to support the implementation of standardized school health activities in their schools. MTC and Suwannimit Foundation work closely with various partners (Mae Sot General Hospital, Help Without Frontiers, Burmese Migrant Teachers Association) in order to successfully carry out the program.
Aye is one of the students from Children’s Development Centre (CDC) who participated in the school health training. She is 17 years old and has been living in the CDC female boarding house which accommodates around 100 students.
CDC’s school health teachers selected Aye as a representative of the CDC school because she cares for the community and is always willing to contribute. Aye has been volunteering with MTC’s community health team and assisted with various events over the last two years. Aye is also actively engaged with school activities, which she enjoys a lot.
‘I have gained useful knowledge and skills through the training. I am confident that I can help the school activities to maintain a clean and safe environment. Over the two years I was involved in a number of activities, such as keeping students’ health records, checking and eliminating mosquito larvae as part of the dengue campaign, providing health education to young children, and assisting the team with vision screening,’
said Aye. As a student leader, Aye has been contributing to the school to be a healthier and safer place, supported by the school health teachers and senior students. The teacher told us that a student like Aye receiving the school health training becomes a great asset to the school.
Aye eagerly shared her experience and thoughts on the training with us.
“Now I can treat and dress small wounds. I learned basic usages of medication and which medicines are available at the school pharmacy cabinet. In an emergency situation, I now know where to refer the patient. I was also provided basic knowledge of public health: infectious diseases and their symptoms; the importance of disease prevention, etc. All of these together, I can advise my peers and teachers to make our school a better place.’
Aye has a number of plans for her future. On the one hand, she wants to pursue the GED program, which is equivalent to the high school diploma, so that she can continue her higher education. On the other hand, she wants to study theology. During the interview we were ensured that she will enjoy and do her best whichever career path she will take.

Through the program, the school health teams assessed 26 migrant learning centers in Mae Sot, Mae Ramad and Phop Phra districts with a total of 780 participating students, teachers and parents. Pharmacy cabinets were purchased and distributed to 14 migrant learning centers, so they can safely store basic medical supplies and medicines.
